Scoping teardown: 3 real briefs, what we'd cut, keep, and ship
Bring your messy brief. We rewrite three live, on stage, and explain why each cut shortens your build by days.
Anyone responsible for scoping internal builds: founders, ops leads, agency PMs, in-house product managers.
What you will take away
- The five questions that scope a brief in ninety minutes
- How to spot scope creep before it shows up in the invoice
- The three cuts we make on every over-scoped project
- The tradeoff conversation that protects your timeline
Agenda
Scoping is the part of every software project that decides whether it ships in two weeks or three quarters. It is also the part nobody trains for.
This session is a live teardown of three real internal software briefs. We rewrite each one on stage, explain why each cut shortens the build, and answer the questions in the room.
You will leave with a checklist you can apply to the next brief that lands on your desk, whether you write it, sign it, or hand it to a vendor.
What we will cover
The exact five questions we use to scope any internal build. The pattern that tells you a brief is heading for overrun before code is written. The cuts that protect your budget without cutting features the team actually needs.
We will also walk through the tradeoff conversation that ends every healthy scoping session: "if you had to ship in two weeks and pick three of these five features, which three?" The answer is always informative, and it is the single fastest way to get to a brief that ships.
Bring a brief to the Q&A
The last fifteen minutes are open. Bring a brief you are unsure about. We will rewrite it live with you, on the call. Three live rewrites in the main session, plus whatever lands in Q&A.
Frequently asked questions
Are the example briefs real?+
Yes, anonymized with the original client's permission. We change company names and identifying details. The scope problems are exactly as they landed.
Do I need a brief to attend?+
No. Most attendees come to learn the framework. Bringing a brief just unlocks the live Q&A rewrite.
Will the framework work for non-software projects?+
Most of it transfers to any fixed-scope project. The specific build-loop pieces are software-specific. The scope discipline is universal.
